I Curse School Bags!

I Curse School Bags!

My daughter while hanging her heavy school bag on her shoulders before leaving for school in the morning looked at me as if she is saying, can’t you do something for it? As she left I thought seriously about the options to make her life easier and smarter by using technology. And honestly speaking, having so many technology platforms available today, carrying heavy school bags is unfair to our children.

So what do we need to do? there are several solutions available in the technology world and one of those is an iPad with iBooks. But the problem is that iPad is an expensive device for school education and specially in countries like Pakistan where children carrying an iPad is a bounty for street criminals. So the challenge is to come up with a cheap device for the sake of both affordability and security as these devices would be of less advantage for criminal minded people.

In my opinion, in Pakistan the roadmap to smart education starts from a smart school bag and eventually to a smart classroom. The need is to find a suitable device with eBook reader to replace traditional textbooks and a writing tool to replace traditional copies. I know there are plenty of eBook readers with handwriting recognition tool are available but again the challenge is to be affordable and child friendly, a customized educational device.

The next step is to revolutionize the classroom by introducing engaging and interactive ways of teaching through the use of technology in order to replace traditional textbooks. Replace the blackboard by projector based presentations through smart devices to save the time spent in writing during the class and to make the content available inside and outside the classroom rather than wasting the content by rubbing the blackboard at the start of every class.
Last but not the least, introduction of new tools and technologies in education will reduce the use paper and printed material to keep the environment clean and green. Its time for all of us techies to jump in and do our part to revolutionize the area of education.

I would humbly put on a request to all the Schools of the our country that PLEASE PROVIDE LOCKERS TO THE KIDS SO THAT THEY CAN KEEP THEIR BOOKS INTO THEM & SO LESSEN THE BURDEN ON THEIR SHOULDERS! Cyber-tronic gadgets are good but everyone cannot afford them, children should learn to write along with the computer studies. One Final Request to the Govt: PLEASE ADMINISTRATE ONE STANDARD OF EDUCATION, THAT COULD BE AFFORDABLE & EASY TO ACQUIRE FOR ALL CITIZEN! PLEASE DISCOURAGE THE DISPARITY IN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM! PLEASE PRODUCE MORE VOCATIONAL INSTITUTES! Thank you! :-)

Sorry to write this again and again but handling physical books is becoming a hassle these days. We need smart solutions for our kids. Affordable devices are being made around the globe for students these days.

any kind of tools and technology is costly in
Pakistan. Education needs to be efficient. Whats the problem with lockers in school? it would be cheapest and fastest.Keep the books that are not needed in the locker and when they are required can be brought back for study etc

    • Arbab Ali Khan

Yes, It is costly at the moment but the technology is transforming to produce affordable solutions. Cheap devices are now being built for students around the world. Handling physical books is becoming a hassle specially when you can derive devices that can handle these issues on just clicks and you don’t even need to move an inch.

sir we dont ve to eat a meal two times a day u r talkin abt ipad it wud be the same like a back man being called Mr white.

I am not talking about iPads at all. I am talking about affordable solutions and yes there are plenty available in the global market. Our government, NGO’s just need to focus on the solutions

Good idea! But it would take time.
I think, lockers should be arranged at schools for students to keep their books, and an after-school session can be arranged for their homeworks. This way kids will have to bring back only those books which they really need at home.
This is practiced in most colleges and higher education institutes and in the west, and makes individuals more responsible regarding their stuff.

The author lives in an idealistic world, there are kids who cannot afford school even though government is providing free books and has waived fees. We are not living in Eutopia where everyone has two square meals, every child has a liberty to choose which school to go to, or even to go to school at all. We are much better off thinking of how every school age child can go to school instead of working for his family’s meal or clothes. Wake up and see the reality of our country before writing blogs for the priveleged few.

I dont understand why people criticize any good suggestions proposed on this platform. Be it for a part of society, atleast thye are good enough to be pondered. The future of Pakistan is bright InshaAllah, things will change and so will the education system. And so these suggestions deserve some space.

They should just have lockers like kids do in the civilized world. Also, schools make kids write all the time just to show how much work they are doing. We can easily home school our kids with the number of tuition options available which the kids have to take up anyway. These private schools are nothing but a bloody nuisance.

The one solution that is being used around the world is a locker, a small container which is assigned by a teacher to each student in which students can put their books in it then can lock it for security. The benefit of using locker is that the students can put all their books in the locker and take home only books which are needed for home. That’s how a students do not need to carry the heavy bag to school each day. the locker system should be introduced in schools here. This should be the investment of any schools for their students.
