Why This Kolaveri Di?

“Why This Kolaveri Di” is the postmodern example of how a song becomes a social sensation, spreads infectiously across the web, and becomes history in a way that was not possible even a few years back.
Brushing aside the routine political issues and scams, the sensation that has made headlines is The Kolaveri song. We call it an event, because it’s the first regional track to top charts, and aired on radio stations and on music channels. ‘The Soup song’ has been viewed over 1.8 million times on the Internet, and that too, just few days of its release. It’s now the most searched song on video sharing websites and Tweeple are tuning to Kolaveri as the latest trend word. Even though many hardly even understand the lyrics , kolaveri is still a super hit.
Apart from the amateur, quirky yet fun knitted lyrics, what sets the song apart from the other released tracks is its contagiously catchy tune. And surprisingly, the man behind it is none other than a 21-year-old debutant music composer, Anirudh Ravichander.
Truly speaking, the first time I heard it a few weeks back, I was amazed at its rampant sharing. A light hearted, casual mix of English, Tamil (now also called Tanglish), broken in parts, unusually playful lyrics, less known singers were a perfect mix to make Kolaveri Di a success? … But there is something genuinely different about it that can’t be really put into words, which made it top the charts.
‘Why This Kolaveri Di” is a song from an upcoming Tamil film 3 starring Dhanush and Shruti Haasan, and it is expected to release in 2012. Written and sung by Dhanush, the song is composed by music director Anirudh Ravichander. Since the song is sung by a drunken guy dumped by a girl (in the film), many say that the song has anti-feminist connotations.
While majority have gone with the flow of the trend to accept and appreciate Kolaveri Di, there are some exceptions to it and those by some music veterans. Lyricist Javed Akhtar tweeted his critique – “Tune ordinary, singing substandard Words an insult to sensibility” an opinion that fetched him a mix of love-hate response. Anirudh Ravichander, the 21-year-old college superstar who’s too overwhelmed on the success of his maiden composition revealed how he was happy that the song reached Javed Sahab’s and that was all he could have ever wished for, no matter what he opinion holds of the song.
Where Google is full of information on Kolaveri di, Twitter is full of thumbs ups. If you’re a KD lover, log onto a site that has the complete English translation of the song. Simple, no frills and clean fun. Maybe this is what today’s youngsters exactly need. Maybe that is why Kolaveri di is simply so appealing.
