Winter comes with short days, chilly nights filled with cold air, wool sweaters and fattening food (especially peanuts!). Moreover, it brings those nose-twitching sneezes, sniffs, snorts, the heavy sighs, runny noses and dry skin! As a matter of fact, even the sun chooses to leave early.

With this grey season, comes its blues. Let’s have a look at how to avoid this evil winter from showing its other colours.

  • Gulp down healthy fluids

Uh-uh! It’s not what you are thinking. I am not talking about sugar and caffeinated beverages. What’s the use of such drinks that only suppress immune-system function, cause weight gain and dehydration. Its simply a no-no. Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water or herbal tea can, not only, keep your digestive system healthy but your weight down and energy up.

  • Worry less, sleep tight!

Sleeping is the most helpful way that revives you back to life no matter how stressful the day goes.  Apart from it, who can resist a warm, cozy bed anyway?

  • Avoid added sugars

Cookies, cakes and candies are a must-to-eat in winters. There’s no way to avoid these sugar-laden scrumptious delights. Eating them all winter long can elevate your weight to the ceilings! AVOID THEM. If you are craving for something sweet, eat fruits instead. Fairfarren people!

  • Go for garlic

Let’s talk science now. The sulfur-containing compounds in the knobby root help increase the potency of two important cells of the immune system, T-lymphocytes and macrophages. Eat garlic raw or cooked for an immune-system boost.

  • Eat fruits and veggies

Not only in winters but in all seasons, fruits are your best friends (no dogs or diamonds ONLY FRUITS). It’s healthy to eat five to ten servings of fruits a day. One serving is equal to:

• 1 medium-size fresh vegetable or fruit
• 1/2 cup (125 mL) fresh, frozen or canned vegetables or fruit
• 1 cup (250 mL) salad
• 1/2 cup (125 mL) juice

  • Be active

Just don’t lie down the whole day and hibernate yourself like a proverbial lizard. It also adds to your weight. Hit the gym and head outdoors. This will, not even, elevate your mood but burn your calories too.

Happy winters. Stay cool!
